01How Fused Bills works, and what Taupia does

What are you actually buying from Fused Bills?

Fused Bills packages energy, broadband, water and TV into one quote carrying an Unlimited Energy fee and a management fee. Taupia sits between that and a comparison site, which prices one bill and hands the result back. Taupia is free, compares energy, broadband and mobile, and there are two ways in. Give it your address and provider quotes come back in about two minutes. Or upload the bills you have: AI agents read the tariff, unit rate, usage, contract end date and any exit fee off them, while other agents watch the market against what you pay now.

The full list of what providers are offering stays visible either way. Taupia recommends one from it and shows why it picked that one, having asked a few questions first so the answer fits how the house actually lives rather than how the industry words things, and nothing changes until you approve it.

Each bill then splits across the house on percentages totalling 100%, worked out from the real amount. Who pays whom

Your money reaches the suppliers through Fused Bills, so whatever it keeps is inside the single figure it quotes. Nothing reaches Taupia from your side. You pay each supplier its own published rate, Taupia splits that across the house and chases the shares, and a provider pays Taupia commission when a switch completes.

Every bill split automatically

Splitwise style, and not forced into an equal share. Each housemate holds a percentage of a bill, the percentages total 100%, and each share is worked out from the real bill amount, so it updates when the bill does.

Taupia does the chasing

So nobody in the house has to be the one who asks. Taupia allocates account-setup tasks, tracks completion, records and flags outstanding shares, and sends reminders while a share is outstanding. Everyone sees the same shares and who has settled. It does not move money: the housemates repay the person the bill is in the name of directly, outside Taupia, and the share reads as settled once it has been repaid.

One housemate is the person the supplier bills

A utility account is usually opened in one person's name. That one named account holder is who the supplier bills, and the obligation to the supplier stays theirs whoever in the house has paid their share. What one Reading house paid for unlimited
Not a Fused figure, and not a per-person price. Reading Students' Union priced nine unlimited packages in March 2025 for one four-bedroom, four-occupant house covering energy, water and broadband. Reading notes that guidance from Ofgem, the energy regulator, would treat a four-bedroom property as high usage, though Ofgem's own bands are consumption quartiles and say nothing about the number of bedrooms. On that high band the house paid about £281 a month direct against the £408 the packages averaged: a premium of about £127 a month, or roughly £32 per person. Reading gives a medium band too, because students are away for long stretches, and there the direct figure is £223 and the premium widens to about £185, or roughly £46 per person. Which one applies depends on how lived-in the house is. One house, not a market price, and worth checking against your own.

What are you paying for when energy is sold as unlimited?

Taupia's argument, not something Fused Bills publishes. Every clause it turns on is one Fused Bills wrote, and this page cites that document above.

Your name goes on the supply contract. The household terms Fused serves say so at clause 9.2.2: it is authorised to manage your account with the suppliers and to enter into agreements with them in your name. You are the supplier's customer, and whatever cap rules Ofgem applies to that tariff apply to it, exactly as they would if you had signed up yourself.

What you never do is pay that tariff. You pay the package Cost, which clause 8.2 defines as the suppliers' charges plus an Unlimited Energy Fee and a Management Fee that Fused keeps. The contract puts a figure on neither. No regulator caps the package Cost. It is legal.

The first fee is named for what it buys. The contract defines the Unlimited Energy Fee as a fee for taking financial responsibility for any over or under consumption at the property, which is Fused carrying the risk of what your house burns. Whoever carries that risk prices for the bad case, because a cold January has to be covered by every month's payment. A house with ordinary usage pays for cover it never uses.

When is Fused Bills the better answer?

Choose Fused Bills if

Your tenancy is not a neat 12 months: Fused builds 9, 10, 11 or 12-month fixed packages, or a variable tariff, to match its length.
You want someone else carrying the risk of a cold January, which is what Fused's unlimited energy fee is named for in its own contract.
Nobody in the house wants to open the accounts: Fused says it sets up all the bills and makes more than 20 phone calls on your behalf. Taupia carries out the energy, broadband and mobile switches you approve, but not water, council tax or the TV Licence.

Choose Taupia if

You want the whole home organised after the switch without hiding the work: Taupia keeps the contracts, provider changes and household tasks together, and its bill and contract context stays available when you need to ask a question.
You want what you pay to be one thing, the supplier's own charge, rather than that plus the two fees the household contract says the company keeps and never puts a figure on. A normal-usage house may not need the headroom behind Fused's over- and under-consumption fee.
You are collecting package quotes and want genuinely different rulebooks: Fused and One Utility Bill are separate products from company number 9534085, but publish the same household contract and charges rulebook.

What do you give up by choosing Taupia?

Taupia does not bundle your payment. It helps you set up directly with each provider, then splits and manages it all with the prices in view, which is why it costs you nothing. Here is what that route does not give you.

Taupia does not bundle your bills into one fixed monthly amount. You pay each provider its own published rate, so a heavy month costs more and a quiet one costs less. It only compares energy, broadband and mobile, and does not compare or switch water, insurance, credit, savings or mortgages.
A provider pays Taupia commission when a switch completes. On energy and gas the rate is the same whichever supplier you pick, so an energy recommendation does not pay Taupia more one way or the other. Broadband and mobile rates vary a little. What is a Fused quote actually built from?

An Allowance for your address, wrapped in obligations most quotes never mention. Clause 10.2 has you agree to make fair use of the utilities and not to use them commercially, and clause 8.9 lets Fused raise your cost if it finds commercial use. The Cost itself, per clause 8.2, contains a Management Fee and an Unlimited Energy Fee that the contract never prices.

What are the alternatives to Fused Bills?

Epic Student Bills, One Utility Bill, Split The Bills and The Bunch are the other packaged providers we compare. One Utility Bill is Fused under another brand, so two quotes from those two are one company's. The other shape is going direct, which Taupia automates. Taupia is free and has no fixed monthly figure to promise either.

What do you have to do if a housemate moves out?

Act, or the rest of you carry it. Fused publishes two routes out: send written evidence the person was removed from the tenancy and it re-spreads the cost across the rest of you, or supply a replacement housemate and the payment plan continues. Until one of those happens everyone named stays liable to the end, and clause 4.7 lets it raise what each remaining occupier pays.
