What are you actually buying from Epic Student Bills?

Epic Student Bills publishes illustrative package prices from £18 to £22 per person weekly, based on five housemates. Taupia sits between that and a comparison site, which prices one bill and hands the result back. Taupia is free, compares energy, broadband and mobile, and there are two ways in. Who pays whom

Your money reaches the suppliers through Epic Student Bills, so whatever it keeps is inside the single figure it quotes. Nothing reaches Taupia from your side. Every bill split automatically

Splitwise style, and not forced into an equal share. Each housemate holds a percentage of a bill, the percentages total 100%, and each share is worked out from the real bill amount, so it updates when the bill does.

Taupia does the chasing

So nobody in the house has to be the one who asks. Taupia allocates account-setup tasks, tracks completion, records and flags outstanding shares, and sends reminders while a share is outstanding. Everyone sees the same shares and who has settled. What one Reading house paid direct
Reading Students' Union priced nine unlimited packages in March 2025 for one four-bedroom, four-occupant Reading house covering energy, water and broadband. Reading notes that guidance from Ofgem, the energy regulator, would treat a four-bedroom property as high usage, and on that band the house paid about £281 a month direct against the £408 the packages averaged: a premium of about £127 a month. Reading also ran a medium band, because students are away for long stretches, and there the direct figure is £223. Which one applies depends on how lived-in the house is. It is useful context for an Epic quote, not a price for every household.

Why is unlimited energy priced above what a house actually uses?

Taupia's argument, not something Epic Student Bills publishes. Every clause it turns on is one Epic Student Bills wrote, and this page cites that document above.

Your name goes on the supply contract. Epic says so at clause 4.5: it acts as the intermediary, and the formal supply contract for each utility is directly between you and the supplier. You are the supplier's customer, and whatever cap rules Ofgem applies to that tariff apply to it, exactly as they would if you had opened the account yourself.

What you never do is pay that tariff. You pay the Fixed Charge, and clause 4.10 says Epic pays the suppliers out of it and keeps any difference as its service fee. The terms put no figure on that difference. No regulator caps the Fixed Charge. It is legal.

That difference is where the pricing sits. Epic sells one figure and pays the suppliers out of it, so it is the one exposed to what a cold January costs. Whoever carries that risk prices for the bad case, because the worst month has to be covered by every month's payment. A house with ordinary usage pays for cover it never uses.

You want a published price you can check before entering a postcode, which most of this market does not offer.
Your house uses a lot of energy and would rather Epic carried that variance: its terms let it, for anyone signing up now, so a February payment and a June payment are the same number.
Everyone signs and the work stops there: Epic says that once everyone accepts, it sets up your utilities and manages everything from start to finish. Taupia carries out the contract steps you approve and keeps the bills, contracts and tasks organised afterwards, but it does not become the supplier or party to the account.

Choose Taupia if

You want one clear view of all the household work, not only a weekly package: Taupia helps compare energy, broadband and mobile, and keeps water, council tax, TV Licence, contracts, changes and setup tasks organised alongside them.

Clauses 4.11 and 4.12 sit outside the usage section and bind every customer. You must declare property details and high-consumption activities, and Epic names bitcoin mining, gaming rigs, personal servers, air conditioners and charging electric vehicles. Failing to declare may lead to adjustments in your fixed charge, additional fees, or termination.

What are the alternatives to Epic Student Bills?

Reading notes Ofgem guidance would treat it as high usage, and on that band it paid about £281 a month direct against the £408 the packages averaged. Reading's medium band gives £223.
