Bill-splitting apps compared

The best bill-splitting apps for UK housemates

Short answer

There is no single best app: it depends on what your house shares. For a running tally of food, trips and rent, Splitwise, Splid, Settle Up and Tricount all work, with different free tiers. Monzo Split works if one of you banks with Monzo. If the shared costs are mostly bills, Taupia splits each one from the real amount, free.

Which bill-splitting app suits your house?

Start from what the house actually shares, then check the free tier against how much you will add.

  • If you share more than bills, an expense app keeps one running balance for food shops, nights out, trips and the rent. Splitwise, Splid, Settle Up and Tricount all work out who owes whom.
  • If you want no daily limit and no ads, Tricount says it is free with no ads and no daily expense cap. Splitwise's free tier allows four new expenses a day, and Settle Up's free version carries ads.
  • If you want no sign-up and to work offline, Splid says there is no sign-up and that it works on and offline.
  • If one of you banks with Monzo, Monzo Split is free for you and your friends, and friends can join as guests without a Monzo account.
  • If the shared costs are mostly the bills, Taupia splits each household bill from its real amount and compares energy, broadband and mobile, free.

How do you split recurring bills differently from one-off costs?

A one-off cost has one amount. A household bill comes back every month at a different one.

  • A one-off cost, such as a food shop or a takeaway, is entered once and divided once. Every app here does that well.
  • A household bill changes with usage and prices, so a fixed amount set up as a recurring entry still needs updating when the bill moves.
  • Agree the rule before the first bill: equal shares, more for the bigger room, or more for whoever is home most. Percentages that add up to 100% keep working when the bill changes; fixed amounts do not.
  • Taupia works from the bill itself: each housemate holds a percentage, the percentages total 100%, and each share is worked out from the real bill amount, so it updates when the bill does.
  • Taupia sends reminders while a share is outstanding and never moves money between housemates. The share reads as settled once it has been repaid.

Who is legally liable for the bill, whatever app you use?

No app changes who the supplier bills. That is decided by whose name is on the account.

  • A supplier bills the person or people named on the account. An app records what housemates owe each other, which is a private arrangement between you.
  • So if a housemate stops paying, the named account holder still owes the supplier. Agree the split, and what happens when someone moves out, before the first bill arrives.
  • Bills packages answer this in their own contracts. UniHomes' household terms make every tenant together and each individually responsible for all the charges, and Homebox's make residents jointly and severally liable for its fees.
  • Taupia can send a request to add further people to an account, but the supplier decides, and nothing Taupia records changes what the named holder owes the supplier.

What should students in a house share check first?

Four checks before the first bill arrives.

  • Whether bills are included in the rent. If they are, there may be nothing to split; if not, list every bill the house needs before move-in.
  • Whose name goes on each account, because that person is the one the supplier bills.
  • How the split works when someone is away over the summer or a room is empty, so nobody is surprised by the bill for a quiet month.
  • Whether a bills package suits your headcount. A package collects one payment from each of you and usually costs more than the bills it covers, so run the comparison for your own house.

When does a bills package beat an app?

When the house values one payment each, and nobody holding an account, over the lowest total.

  • When nobody wants a supplier account in their name: a package arranges the accounts and collects a share from each of you.
  • When the house wants one predictable payment and accepts paying for it. Homebox's bundle adds a subscription from £15 a month per resident, and UniHomes' terms make its service fee the gap between what it collects and what it pays the providers.
  • When usage is heavy enough for unlimited energy to pay off. Reading Students' Union priced nine unlimited packages in March 2025 for one four-bedroom Reading house at an average of about £408 a month, against about £281 paying direct on the high-usage band and £223 on the medium band.
  • An app, or Taupia, keeps each supplier's own rate on real usage and a split the house sets itself, which is usually the lower total for a house with ordinary usage.

What does Taupia not do?

  • It does not move money. Housemates repay the person the bill is in the name of directly, outside Taupia.
  • It does not pay bills for you or collect money from housemates.
  • It does not switch water or set up council tax, though it keeps both in view.
  • It compares energy from 19 suppliers covering around 90% of the GB market, not every supplier, plus broadband and mobile.

Questions housemates ask about bill-splitting apps

What is the best app for splitting bills in the UK?

It depends on what your house shares. For a running tally of food, trips and rent, Splitwise, Splid, Settle Up and Tricount all work, and Tricount says it has no ads and no daily cap. Monzo Split is free if one of you banks with Monzo. If the shared costs are mostly the household bills, Taupia splits each from its real amount and compares energy, broadband and mobile, free.

Is Splitwise free?

Yes, with a limit. Splitwise is free on iPhone, Android and the web, and its help centre says free users can add up to four expenses each day. Splitwise Pro removes the limit and adds receipt scanning, currency conversion and charts. On 13 October 2026 the UK App Store listed Pro purchases from £2.79 to £47.99, renewing monthly or yearly.

Can an app pay the bill for us?

Not the apps here. Splitwise, Splid, Settle Up and Tricount record who owes whom, and Monzo Split settles up between people, but the supplier is paid by whoever holds the account. Taupia does not pay bills or move money either. If you want one company to collect a share from each housemate and pay the suppliers, that is a bills package, and it charges for doing so.

How do you split bills fairly when one room is bigger?

Agree a percentage for each person rather than a fixed amount, such as a larger share for the bigger room, and write the rule down before the first bill. Percentages keep working when the bill changes. Taupia holds each housemate's percentage, the percentages total 100%, and each share is worked out from the real bill amount.

Split the house bills from the real amount

Taupia is free. Give your address for provider quotes in about two minutes, or upload a bill you already have, then set each housemate's share.
