01How Splitwise works, and what Taupia does

What are you actually buying from Splitwise?

Splitwise is a free app for iPhone, Android and the web that keeps a running tally of shared costs, from a dinner bill to the rent, and works out who owes whom. Bills can recur weekly, fortnightly, monthly or yearly. Free accounts can add up to four expenses a day; Splitwise Pro removes the limit and adds receipt scanning, currency conversion and charts.

In the UK it records payments rather than making them: its listing names Venmo and PayPal as US-only payment integrations and Paytm as India-only. The bill itself stays with whoever holds the account, so the amount Splitwise divides is whatever someone enters.

Taupia starts from the bill. It is free and compares energy, broadband and mobile, with two ways in: give it your address and provider quotes come back in about two minutes, or upload the bills you have and AI agents read the tariff, usage, contract end date and any exit fee. It recommends one deal with its reasons and changes nothing until you approve it.

Each household bill then splits on percentages the house sets, totalling 100%, worked out from the real amount so a share updates when the bill does. Water, council tax and TV Licence stay in view, though Taupia does not compare or switch them.

Who pays whom

With Splitwise Your house Suppliers you pay the supplier With Taupia Your house Suppliers you pay the supplier Taupia commission on a completed switch
The bills are paid the same way in both rows: one of you pays the supplier, and the rest of the house repays that person. In the UK neither Splitwise nor Taupia moves that money. Splitwise offers a paid tier of its own, and a provider pays Taupia commission when a switch completes.

02Supplier account setup

Taupia splits every bill automatically, and never moves the money.

An expense app divides whatever amount goes into it. A household bill still arrives in one person's name, often at a different amount each time. Here is what Taupia does with the split, and where it stops.

01

Every bill split automatically

Not forced into an equal share. Each housemate holds a percentage of a bill, the percentages total 100%, and each share is worked out from the real bill amount, so it updates when the bill does.

02

Taupia does the chasing

So nobody in the house has to be the one who asks. Each housemate repays the person the bill is in the name of directly, outside Taupia, and the share reads as settled once it has been repaid. Taupia sends reminders while a share is outstanding, and everyone sees the same shares and who has settled.

03

One housemate is the person the supplier bills

A utility account is usually opened in one person's name. That one named account holder is who the supplier bills, and the obligation to the supplier stays theirs whoever in the house has paid their share. Taupia can send a request to add further people to the account, but the supplier decides. If a share is late, Taupia flags it and sends reminders. It never moves money between housemates, and nothing it records changes what the named holder owes the supplier.

06Who Splitwise suits, and who Taupia suits

When is Splitwise the better answer?

Choose Splitwise if

  • Most of what you share is not a household bill: food shops, nights out, trips and the rent all go in one running balance, with the debts simplified into the easiest repayment plan.

  • Your group spans more than one home or more than one currency: Splitwise works between any friends, and Pro converts expenses into your default currency.

  • You only need the tally: if the bills are already on deals you are happy with, Splitwise's free tier covers up to four new expenses a day.

Choose Taupia if

  • The shared costs are mostly the household bills, and you want each share worked out from the real bill amount rather than typed in each time it changes.

  • You want the bills themselves looked after: Taupia compares energy, broadband and mobile from your address or your own bills, recommends one deal with its reasons and changes nothing until you approve it.

  • You want someone else to do the chasing: Taupia sends reminders while a share is outstanding, and everyone sees the same shares and who has settled.

07Taupia's own limitations

What do you give up by choosing Taupia?

Taupia does not bundle your payment. It helps you set up directly with each provider, then splits and manages it all with the prices in view, which is why it costs you nothing. Here is what that route does not give you.

  1. Taupia is built around the household bills. It splits each one from its real amount and compares energy, broadband and mobile, but it does not compare or switch water, insurance, credit, savings or mortgages, and it does not move money between housemates.

  2. A provider pays Taupia commission when a switch completes. On energy and gas the rate is the same whichever supplier you pick, so an energy recommendation does not pay Taupia more one way or the other. Broadband and mobile rates vary a little. The full list it recommends from is the suppliers Taupia supports, published on its supported suppliers page.

How Taupia works

08Splitwise questions answered

What else should you check before signing?

Can Splitwise pay the bill for you?

No. Splitwise records shared costs and who owes whom. In the UK, paying a housemate back happens outside the app and is recorded in it, because its payment integrations are Venmo and PayPal in the US and Paytm in India. The supplier is paid by whoever holds the account. Taupia does not move money either: housemates repay the account holder directly.

Can you use Splitwise and Taupia together?

Yes, and they overlap less than it looks. Splitwise suits the mixed costs of sharing a home, such as food, nights out, trips and the rent. Taupia covers the household bills themselves: it splits each one from the real amount, compares energy, broadband and mobile, and flags contract end dates. A house can keep the bills in one and everything else in the other.

Is Splitwise or Taupia better for students?

It depends on what the house shares. A house splitting food, trips and the rent alongside the bills may want Splitwise's running balance, which is free for up to four new expenses a day. A house whose main shared costs are energy, broadband and mobile gets those compared and split from the real bill in Taupia, free. Neither moves money between housemates in the UK.

09Deciding between Splitwise and Taupia

So what should you do next?

Splitwise keeps the tally for any shared cost. Taupia starts from the bills themselves, splits each from its real amount and keeps the contracts behind them in view.
