How do I check the council tax band for an address?

Short answer

In England and Wales, search the address on GOV.UK's Check your Council Tax band service; in Scotland, the assessor for your area handles bands. Your bill depends on three things: the band, your council's charge for that band and any discount.

If you think the band is wrong, you have a legal right to challenge it while you have been paying council tax there for less than 6 months.

Are you moving in, or already living there?

You pick your exact address on the next screen. Nothing is priced before that.

England, Scotland and Wales. In Scotland it shows the council. The charge is the council's figure for the band; parish charges can make a bill slightly different.

The band is only part of the bill: your council's charge for it and any discount decide the rest. This guide covers where to look a band up, what sets the bill, and how to challenge a band you think is wrong.

Where do I check a council tax band?

On GOV.UK for England and Wales; with the assessor in Scotland.

  • Search the address on GOV.UK's Check your Council Tax band service, for homes in England and Wales.
  • In Scotland, GOV.UK says challenges go to an assessor based in your local Valuation Joint Board or council, found through the Scottish Assessors Association.
  • Bands are based on what a home was worth on 1 April 1991 in England and 1 April 2003 in Wales, not on what it is worth today.

What decides how much council tax I pay?

The band, your council's charge for it and any discount.

  • GOV.UK says you need to know three things: the valuation band for your home, how much your council charges for that band, and whether you can get a discount or exemption.
  • A full council tax bill is based on at least two adults living in a home, so a home with one adult usually pays less.
  • You may be able to get Council Tax Reduction if you are on a low income or get benefits.
  • Every council's Band D charge for 2026/27 is listed on the council tax band guide.

Can I challenge my council tax band?

Yes, with a legal right within 6 months of starting to pay.

  • GOV.UK says you have a legal right to challenge your band (making a proposal) if you think it is wrong and you have been paying council tax on the property for less than 6 months, or the Valuation Office changed the band in the last 6 months.
  • You also have a legal right to challenge if there has been a change that affects the property.
  • Without a legal right, you can still ask for a band review if you think the band is wrong.
  • In England and Wales you challenge through the Valuation Office; in Scotland, through your local assessor.

What can change a home's council tax band?

Building work, splitting or merging homes, and changes around the home.

  • GOV.UK lists changes that can move a home into a different band: demolishing part of it without rebuilding, creating self-contained units such as an annexe, splitting a property into flats or converting flats into one home.
  • Changes the previous owner made, significant changes to the local area such as a new road, and a similar home nearby changing band can also affect it.
  • Ask the Valuation Office if you want to know whether a change will affect your band.

What are the steps to check and challenge a band?

Four steps, from the GOV.UK lookup to a challenge within 6 months.

  1. 1

Look up the band on GOV.UK

Search the address on Check your Council Tax band in England and Wales; in Scotland, contact the assessor for the area.

  2. 2

Find the council charge for the band

The council's charge for the band sets most of the bill; parish charges can make it slightly different.

  3. 3

    Check for discounts

A full bill assumes at least two adults live in the home, and Council Tax Reduction can help on a low income.

  4. 4

Challenge within 6 months if it looks wrong

You have a legal right to challenge while you have paid council tax there for less than 6 months.

Council tax bands: common questions

What council tax band am I?

Search your address on GOV.UK's Check your Council Tax band service in England and Wales, or check with the assessor for your area in Scotland. Your council tax bill also names the band, and your council's charge for that band sets most of what you pay.

How are council tax bands worked out?

GOV.UK says bands are based on what a property was worth on 1 April 1991 in England and on 1 April 2003 in Wales, not on its value today. The Valuation Office handles bands in England and Wales, and assessors handle challenges in Scotland.

Can I challenge my council tax band after moving in?

Yes. GOV.UK says you have a legal right to challenge your band if you think it is wrong and you have been paying council tax on the property for less than 6 months. In England and Wales you challenge through the Valuation Office; in Scotland, through your local assessor.

Why is my council tax bill different from the band charge?

Discounts and the number of adults change it. GOV.UK says a full bill assumes at least two adults live in the home, so a single adult usually pays less, and you may get Council Tax Reduction on a low income. Parish charges can also make bills differ slightly within one council.

What changes a home's council tax band?

GOV.UK lists changes such as splitting a house into flats, merging flats into one home, demolishing part of a property, work by a previous owner, a big change in the area or a similar home's band changing. Ask the Valuation Office whether a change will affect yours.
