FAQ

Council tax checker questions

Why does the checker ask for counted adults instead of household size?

Council Tax discounts depend on how many adults are counted, not just how many people live in the home. Some adults are disregarded for Council Tax purposes, which can change the discount.

Can I get more than one form of support?

Sometimes, yes. A household can qualify for a discount or exemption and still be eligible for means-tested Council Tax Reduction. The council will calculate the final bill under local rules.

Does this checker handle second homes and empty homes exactly?

It identifies that second-home or empty-home rules apply and points to official routes. Premiums and exceptions vary by council and nation, so final outcomes must be confirmed locally.

I recently moved in. Can relief be backdated?

Some councils can backdate discounts or reductions from when eligibility started, but the policy varies. Apply promptly and include your move-in date and evidence.
