Which energy rates apply in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is in Ofgem's South Scotland region, where SP Energy Networks runs the electricity network. The region sets the most a supplier can charge on a default tariff.

  • Ofgem's postcode lookup puts central Edinburgh postcodes, including EH1, EH3, EH8 and EH9, in the South Scotland region.
  • Direct Debit, 1 October to 31 December 2026: electricity 26.11p per kWh with a 61.41p daily standing charge, and gas 7.87p per kWh with a 29.89p daily standing charge.
  • Prepayment meter: electricity 25.31p per kWh with a 61.41p daily standing charge, and gas 7.57p per kWh with a 29.89p daily standing charge.
  • Ofgem says the cap limits these rates, not the total bill: the more energy you use, the higher your bill. A fixed tariff follows its own rates instead.
  • Electricity rates are for single-rate meters. Multi-rate tariffs such as Economy 7 have their own capped rates on Ofgem's page.

Illustration

What would energy cost a Edinburgh student house?

An illustration, not a quote: Ofgem's typical usage for one household, priced at the South Scotland Direct Debit cap rates. A shared house usually uses more.

  • Ofgem's typical consumption is 2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas a year. At the South Scotland Direct Debit rates, with a standing charge for all 365 days, that is about £1,734 a year: £877 for electricity and £857 for gas.
  • Shared by three: about £578 each a year, or £48.16 a month.
  • Shared by four: about £433 each a year, or £36.12 a month.
  • Shared by five: about £347 each a year, or £28.89 a month.
  • The same usage on a prepayment meter comes to about £1,685 a year at the South Scotland prepayment rates.
  • These figures assume a default tariff, single-rate electricity and a full year at the October to December 2026 rates, although Ofgem sets the cap every 3 months. A house of three to five adults usually uses more than one typical household, so treat them as a starting point, not a forecast.

Water

Who supplies water in Edinburgh?

Scottish Water supplies water and sewerage, and the City of Edinburgh Council collects the charges with council tax.

  • Scottish Water says most households are billed for water and waste water by their council, with council tax, and that full-time students are exempt from those household charges.
  • Citizens Advice Scotland says a home is exempt from council tax and water and sewerage charges only if everyone in it is exempt from council tax, and that a council tax exemption is unlikely to cover metered water charges.

Council tax

Do students pay council tax in Edinburgh?

Not if everyone in the house is a full-time student, but you still have to claim the exemption from the City of Edinburgh Council.

  • mygov.scot says you do not pay council tax if everyone in your household is a full-time student. Over 20, that means at least 21 hours a week on a course lasting at least 24 weeks a year.
  • If you are a full-time student living with adults who must pay council tax, mygov.scot says you may not need to pay towards it.
  • The City of Edinburgh Council gives a 100% exemption when only students live in a property and 25% off when all but one adult are students, and says the discount also reduces water and sewerage charges.
  • Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh Napier University, SRUC and the University of Edinburgh can share your details if you have given permission; students elsewhere apply online and upload a student certificate. The discount ends when your course ends, normally before graduation.

The rest of the list

What else should a Edinburgh student house set up?

Broadband, a TV Licence if anyone watches live TV or BBC iPlayer, and a plan for the weeks the house stands empty.

  • Broadband: one contract for the house is usual. Agree whose name it goes in, and match the minimum term to the tenancy so nobody pays after the house moves out.
  • TV Licence: GOV.UK says one licence covers the household if you have a joint tenancy agreement, but with separate tenancy agreements anyone who watches TV in their own room needs their own. A licence costs £180.
  • Empty weeks: Ofgem says a standing charge is paid every day, even when you use no energy. At the South Scotland Direct Debit rates, electricity and gas standing charges come to 91.30p a day, about £19.17 over a 21-day Christmas break before any energy is used.

Edinburgh student bills FAQ

Questions about student bills in Edinburgh

How much are bills per week in a Edinburgh student house?

For energy alone, about £8.31 each a week between four, or £6.65 between five. That is an illustration of Ofgem's typical use for one household at South Scotland Direct Debit cap rates for October to December 2026, and a shared house usually uses more. Broadband and a TV Licence come on top; there are no council tax or water charges if everyone is a full-time student.

Do we pay council tax if we're all students in Edinburgh?

No. mygov.scot says you do not pay council tax if everyone in your household is a full-time student, and Scottish Water says full-time students are exempt from its household charges too. You still need to apply to the City of Edinburgh Council. One adult who is not a student usually means a bill with 25% off.

How do we claim the student council tax exemption in Edinburgh?

Apply online to the City of Edinburgh Council. If you study at Queen Margaret, Edinburgh Napier, SRUC or the University of Edinburgh and agreed to share your details, that may be enough; otherwise upload your student certificate. The council says the discount ends when your course does, normally before your graduation date.

Who do we pay for water in Edinburgh?

In most homes, the City of Edinburgh Council collects Scottish Water's charges with council tax, and Scottish Water says full-time students are exempt. The council says its student discount also reduces water and sewerage charges. A metered home is different: Scottish Water bills it directly, and a council tax exemption is unlikely to cover it.

Which energy region is Edinburgh in?

Edinburgh is in Ofgem's South Scotland region, where SP Energy Networks runs the electricity network. For 1 October to 31 December 2026, a Direct Debit default tariff there is capped at 26.11p per kWh for electricity and 7.87p for gas. The region follows the local network, not your supplier, so switching does not change it.

Do we still pay bills over the summer in Edinburgh?

Mostly, yes. Ofgem says standing charges are paid every day: at South Scotland Direct Debit rates, electricity and gas together cost 91.30p a day before you use any energy. Rent and broadband usually carry on too. There are still no council tax or Scottish Water charges while everyone is a full-time student.

Keep your Edinburgh house's bills in one place

Taupia monitors the house's bills, compares and switches energy, broadband and mobile once the household approves, and splits each bill and tracks who has paid. It moves no money, does not set up council tax or switch water, and it is free.
