Who supplies my address?

Short answer

For gas, search the postcode on Find My Supplier or call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524. For electricity, find your network operator on the Energy Networks Association's postcode search, then use the operator's supplier search. For water, use Water UK's postcode checker. For the council tax band in England and Wales, search the address on GOV.UK.

A recent bill, or a letter addressed to The Occupier, also names the supplier.

See who supplies an address

Pick the address to see who supplies its energy, its water company, its council and council tax band, and broadband deals, in one list.

Are you moving in, or already living there?

You pick your exact address on the next screen. Nothing is priced before that.

England, Scotland and Wales. The water figure is the company's average bill.

Gas, electricity, water and council tax each have their own official lookup. This guide gives all four, what each needs and what to do for a home you are moving into.

How do I find my gas supplier?

Search the postcode on Find My Supplier, or call the Meter Number Helpline.

  • Search the property's postcode on Find My Supplier, the service Xoserve runs for gas.
  • Or call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5pm. Citizens Advice says calls cost 7p a minute plus your phone company's access charge.
  • You can ask for the Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN), which a new supplier may ask for when you sign up.

How do I find my electricity supplier?

Find your network operator first, then search its site by postcode.

  • Citizens Advice says to find out first who your network operator is: the company that owns and runs the cables in your area. The Energy Networks Association's site tells you from the postcode.
  • Then search for your supplier on the network operator's website. You can usually search by postcode, though some operators ask you to fill in a form.
  • The network operator is not your supplier: it maintains the wires, and your supplier bills you for the electricity.

How do I find my water company?

Water UK's postcode checker names the water and the wastewater provider.

  • Enter the postcode on Water UK's checker to find the water and wastewater provider for the address.
  • Some homes get water from one company and sewerage from another, so the checker names both.
  • The checker is run by Landlord TAP, a company separate from Water UK, which handles any missing addresses.

How do I find my council and council tax band?

GOV.UK's band service covers England and Wales.

  • Search the address on GOV.UK's Check your Council Tax band service in England and Wales.
  • GOV.UK says your bill depends on three things: the band, your council's charge for that band, and any discount or exemption.
  • Bands are based on what a home was worth on 1 April 1991 in England and 1 April 2003 in Wales. In Scotland, the assessor for your area handles bands.
  • If you think a band is wrong, you have a legal right to challenge it while you have been paying council tax there for less than 6 months.

Who supplies a home I am moving into?

Whoever supplies it already, until you choose otherwise.

  • The supplier already connected to the home supplies you from the day you move in. Citizens Advice says you are on a deemed contract, on its default or standard variable tariff, until you choose another.
  • British Gas notes that if the last occupants told their supplier they were leaving, you may get a letter addressed to The Occupier. For a new build, the developer should tell you; if you rent, ask the landlord or letting agent.
  • Read the meters on the day you move in and give the readings to the supplier.

What are the steps to find every supplier?

Five steps, starting with the paperwork you already have.

  3. 3

    Find the electricity network operator

Use the Energy Networks Association's postcode search, then the operator's own supplier search.

  4. 4

Check the water company by postcode

Water UK's postcode checker names the water and the wastewater provider.

  5. 5

    Check the council tax band

Search the address on GOV.UK's band service in England and Wales.

Where does Taupia fit when I look up an address?

  • The address block above names who supplies the energy, the water company, the council and the council tax band, and lists broadband deals, for an exact address in England, Scotland and Wales. In Scotland it shows the council rather than the band, and the water figure is the company's average bill.
  • Taupia compares energy, broadband and mobile deals and switches once your household approves. Nothing changes without your approval.
  • Taupia does not set up council tax or switch water: register with the council and the water company yourself.
  • Taupia is free to use.
