How do I move BT broadband when I move house?

Short answer

Start the move in your BT account with the new address and a moving date. BT says two weeks' notice is normally plenty, and that it can handle shorter notice in most cases. Keep your package and you stay on the same contract and account, taking your equipment with you; upgrading starts a new contract.

If your services will be more than two days late, BT says it will offer a 4G Mini Hub with unlimited data at no extra cost.

How do I tell BT I am moving house?

In your BT account, with the new address and a moving date.

  • Start your home move with your BT login: give the new address and choose a moving date.
  • BT says two weeks' notice is normally plenty of time to get you set up, and that it can support shorter notice in most cases.

What happens to my BT contract when I move?

Keep your package and the contract carries on. Upgrade and a new one starts.

  • When you start the move you can check the speeds available at the new address and decide what you want.
  • If you keep your existing package, BT says you continue on the same contract with the same account, and you take your equipment with you.
  • Upgrading your package starts a new contract.
  • BT says the monthly price of its broadband plans rises by £4 on 31 March each year, and TV plans by £2, on top of the prices in your contract.

What if my BT services are late at the new home?

BT offers a 4G backup hub if the delay is more than two days.

  • If you need a new hub, BT says it arrives a day before your planned activation date. Otherwise, plug your existing hub in when you arrive.
  • If BT knows your services will be delayed by more than two days, it says it will offer a 4G Mini Hub on the EE network with unlimited mobile data, at no extra cost.
  • Ofcom suggests checking broadband and mobile coverage at the new address before you move, so a slower line there is not a surprise.

Should I take BT with me or switch provider?

Keep BT for the same contract and account. Compare first if your minimum term has ended.

  • Taking BT with you on the same package keeps your contract and account as they are.
  • If your minimum term has ended, moving is a good point to compare the deals for the new address before you book.
  • If you change provider, Ofcom says you need to cancel your current contract and arrange a start date for the new service in time for the move. Check your BT contract for any early termination charge first.

What are the steps to move BT to a new home?

Four steps, from your BT account to the backup hub if the move runs late.

  1. 1

Start the move in your BT account

Sign in, give the new address and choose a moving date, ideally two weeks ahead.

  2. 2

Check the speeds at the new address

BT shows the speeds available there, so you can keep your package or change it.

  3. 3

Take your equipment if you keep the package

Staying on the same package keeps the same contract, and you plug your existing hub in at the new home.

  4. 4

Ask for the 4G backup if the move runs late

If BT expects a delay of more than two days, it offers a 4G Mini Hub with unlimited data at no extra cost.

Moving house with BT: common questions

How much notice does BT need when I move house?

BT says two weeks' notice is normally plenty of time to set you up at the new address, and that it can support shorter notice in most cases. The process can take two weeks but is often much faster. Start the move in your BT account with the new address and moving date.

Does moving house with BT start a new contract?

Not if you keep your package. BT says you can continue on the same contract with the same account, taking your equipment with you to the new home. Upgrading your package as part of the move starts a new contract, so check the term before you choose.

What if my BT broadband is late after I move?

BT's moving home page gives 0800 783 0235 for its home move team. You can also start or change a home move order online with your BT login, including your delivery, installation and upgrade options, before the moving date.

Will my BT price change when I move?

Keeping your package keeps your contract, and BT's yearly rise still applies: BT says broadband plans go up by £4 a month and TV plans by £2 on 31 March each year. Upgrading to a new package starts a new contract at that package's price.
