How do I tell British Gas I am moving house?

Short answer

Tell British Gas your new address and moving dates through its home move page, at least 48 hours before you move. Read your meters on the day you move out and give it a forwarding address for the final bill, which must reach you within 6 weeks.

You can ask to take British Gas with you. Whether your account can move depends on the supply at the new home, and British Gas says fixed-tariff exit fees are unlikely when you move, but to check.

England, Scotland and Wales. Switching is your choice: you can also stay with the current supplier.

Whether you take British Gas with you or it already supplies your new home, the steps are the same: dates, meter readings and a forwarding address. This is what British Gas says, and the rules every supplier follows.

How do I tell British Gas I am moving?

On its home move page, with your new address and moving dates.

  • British Gas's home move page asks you to tell it about your move: your new address and your moving dates.
  • Citizens Advice says to give your supplier at least 48 hours' notice before you move.
  • Read your meters on the day you move out, give the readings to British Gas and keep a note of them and the date, so you can check the final bill.
  • Give British Gas a forwarding address so it can send the final bill. Citizens Advice says you then have 28 days to pay it.

Can I take my British Gas tariff to my new home?

Ask when you tell British Gas: it depends on the supply at the new home.

  • British Gas says whether you can take your existing account with you depends on whether it is possible to take over the supply at your new property, so ask when you tell it about the move.
  • On a fixed tariff, British Gas says it is unlikely you will be charged an exit fee for moving, but to check with your supplier.
  • Citizens Advice says breaking a fixed contract early can mean an exit fee, and that if you break it you go onto a standard variable tariff at the new home.
  • British Gas's home move page also answers questions about HomeCare, Hive heating controls and smart meters at the new home.

When will I get my final British Gas bill?

Within 6 weeks, with any credit refunded within 10 working days.

  • Citizens Advice says your old supplier must send your final bill within 6 weeks, and might owe you compensation if it does not.
  • If you are in credit, it must refund you within 10 working days of sending the final bill, and might owe you compensation if the refund is late.
  • Check the final bill against the meter readings and dates you noted on moving day.

What if British Gas already supplies my new home?

Give it readings when you move in, and choose a tariff when you are ready.

  • Read the meters as soon as you move in and give the readings to the current supplier, which creates a new account for you, British Gas says.
  • British Gas says you should not be charged for energy the previous occupants used.
  • Until you choose a tariff, you are on the current supplier's standard tariff: Citizens Advice calls this a deemed contract on the default or standard variable tariff.
  • You can stay with British Gas on another of its tariffs, or switch supplier. Moving in is a natural point to compare.

What are the steps to move house with British Gas?

Five steps, from telling British Gas your dates to choosing a tariff at the new home.

  1. 1

Tell British Gas your moving dates

Give your new address and moving dates on British Gas's home move page, at least 48 hours ahead.

  2. 2

Read the meters at the old home

Take readings on the day you move out, give them to British Gas and keep a note with the date.

  3. 3

    Give a forwarding address

British Gas sends the final bill there; Citizens Advice says it must arrive within 6 weeks.

  4. 4

Read the meters at the new home

Give the readings to the new home's supplier on the day you move in, so you pay only for your own energy.

  5. 5

Choose a tariff for the new home

You start on the supplier's standard tariff. Take British Gas with you, pick another tariff or switch.
