Moving house with NI Water: register, meters and help

Short answer

Households in Northern Ireland do not pay water bills, so there is no NI Water account to open when you move. The Department for Infrastructure pays NI Water a subsidy in place of domestic customers' contributions, and NI Water's 2026/27 charges confirm domestic charges remain deferred. Keep Waterline, its 24-hour line, for faults and leaks.

Waterline, NI Water's customer line

NI Water serves all of Northern Ireland. How water is paid for here differs from England and Wales, so the steps a mover follows differ too. This page sets out what, if anything, you need to do, what the charge is based on, and where help with the cost comes from.

Moving in

Do I need to register with NI Water when I move in?

NI Water works differently from the companies in England and Wales, and for most homes there is no account to open.

  • Department for Infrastructure: the department pays a subsidy to Northern Ireland Water in lieu of domestic consumers' contributions.
  • NI Water: its 2026/27 charges, announced on 31 March 2026, are set in the light of the continuing deferment of domestic charges.
  • NI Water: eligible measured customers continue to receive a domestic allowance that reduces what they pay, and unmeasured customers who cannot receive a volumetric allowance have their charges set at 50% of the full amount. That is the only scenario in which a home sees a water charge.

  1. 1

Check whether the home has a water meter

Households in Northern Ireland are not billed for water, so for most homes there is nothing to register. A metered home is the exception, and NI Water's charges scheme applies a domestic allowance to eligible measured customers.

  2. 2

Keep NI Water's Waterline number for faults and leaks

There is no account to open, but Waterline is the route for a burst, a supply interruption or a question about the home's connection.

  3. 3

Set the rest of the bills up as normal

Rates, energy and broadband still need registering at the new address. Water is the one bill you can leave off the list.

The first bill

What is my first NI Water bill based on?

  • Department for Infrastructure: the Grants to Water and Sewerage Undertakers Order (Northern Ireland) 2017 extended the subsidy payment from the department to NI Water, which is paid in lieu of domestic consumers' contributions.
  • NI Water: domestic charges remain deferred for 2026/27. A metered home that is eligible gets a domestic allowance against measured charges, so even there the household is not billed for ordinary use.
  • Because there is no bill, there is no meter decision, no rateable value question and no social tariff to apply for. Rates, energy and broadband are the bills that need setting up at a Northern Ireland address.

Meters

Can I get a water meter from NI Water, and can I switch back?

  • NI Water: eligible measured customers continue to receive a domestic allowance that reduces what they pay. Unmeasured customers who cannot receive a volumetric domestic allowance have charges set at 50% of the full amount.
  • The free-meter rules, the eight-week fitting window and the two-year switch back on this site's England and Wales pages come from Ofwat and CCW, whose remit is England and Wales. None of them applies in Northern Ireland.

Help with bills

What help does NI Water offer if I cannot afford the bill?

  • Department for Infrastructure: household contributions are replaced by a subsidy paid to NI Water, so there is no domestic charge for a support scheme to reduce.
  • WaterSure and company social tariffs are England and Wales schemes run under Ofwat's and CCW's remit. They have no Northern Ireland equivalent because there is no household water charge.

Leaks and complaints

What if there is a leak, or a dispute with NI Water?

  • NI Water: Waterline is 0345 744 0088, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with Text Relay on the same line. It also lists email, webchat, an online contact form and a postal address.
  • NI Water: a burst, a supply interruption or a leak is reported through Waterline or its Report a Leak route rather than through any account, because there is no household account.
  • NI Water publishes a complaints route on the same contact page. Start there; the Consumer Council for Water does not cover Northern Ireland.

Where Taupia stands

Does Taupia switch my water from NI Water?

No, and nobody can. There is no water market for households, so there is no commission in this bill and nothing for a comparison site to sell you.

  • Taupia keeps the NI Water account next to your energy, broadband and mobile: what it costs, when it is due, and each housemate's share on the rule your household sets.
  • For energy, broadband and mobile, Taupia compares your tariff against the market and lines up a switch when one is worth it. Water is monitored only, because it cannot be switched.
  • Taupia is free. You pay the water company directly, as you always have, and nothing changes without your approval.

NI Water FAQ

Questions movers ask about NI Water

Can I switch from NI Water to a cheaper water company?

No. NI Water supplies households across Northern Ireland, and household customers cannot choose a different water or sewerage provider anywhere in the UK. What you can look at is how you are charged, which for most homes here is set by the system described above rather than by a tariff.

Do I open an account with NI Water when I move in?

There is no NI Water account for a household to open, because domestic water charges are deferred and the Department for Infrastructure pays NI Water in place of households. Keep a dated note of the day you moved in all the same, because it is the date any later query about the charge will turn on.

What is an unmetered NI Water bill based on?

There is no first bill. Domestic water charges in Northern Ireland are deferred, and NI Water is funded for household supply by a subsidy from the Department for Infrastructure rather than by billing occupiers. Using less water does not change an unmetered bill, because nothing is measured. A metered home pays for the water recorded plus a standing charge.

Can I switch back to unmetered charges with NI Water?

There is no household meter decision in Northern Ireland, because homes are not billed for water. NI Water's 2026/27 charges give eligible measured customers a domestic allowance, so a metered home is not charged for ordinary use either. Check the current terms with the company before you apply.

What help does NI Water give if I cannot afford the water bill?

There is no water bill to need help with. Northern Ireland has no WaterSure and no water social tariff because domestic charges are deferred and the Department for Infrastructure funds household supply. Ask early: CCW says companies can also offer payment plans and, in some cases, payment breaks.

Does Taupia switch my water supplier from NI Water?

No, because nobody can. Water is a regional monopoly with no household market, so Taupia monitors the bill rather than switching it. It sits alongside your energy, broadband and mobile, where switching is possible, with the due date and each housemate's share. Taupia is free and you keep paying the water company directly.

Keep the water bill with the rest

There is no water deal to switch to and no commission in this bill. Taupia keeps your NI Water account, move-in reading and dates next to your energy, broadband and mobile, and splits the bill with housemates on the rule you set. Free, and nothing changes without your approval.
