Moving house with Anglian Water: register, meters and help

Short answer

Anglian Water comes with the address, so there is nothing to compare. Tell it you have moved through MyAccount or its online moving form, with both addresses and a meter reading for each home. Around 90% of its customers already pay by meter, and it is moving more areas onto measured charges by April 2030.

Anglian Water's published window to switch back after a meter

Anglian Water supplies the East of England. This page covers the move-in steps in the company's own terms: how to register as the new occupier, what the first bill is based on, how to get a meter and whether you can go back, and the help it publishes for households that cannot afford the bill.

Moving in

How do I tell Anglian Water I have moved in?

You do not choose Anglian Water: the address does. The job is telling it the right date so the charges start when your tenancy or ownership did.

  • CCW lists Anglian Water's area as the East of England.
  • Anglian Water: if you are moving within its region, register for MyAccount and tell it about the change of address, or fill in its online form.
  • Anglian Water: have your previous account number if you were already its customer, the full postal address of your old and new property, and your water meter reading for both.
  • Anglian Water: once you are in, read your meter if you have one and send the reading as soon as you can, so your bill is accurate.
  • Ofwat: under the current legislation, household customers are not able to change their water supplier or sewerage service provider. The company that supplies your property depends on where you live.

  1. 1

Read the meter on the day you move in

If the home has a water meter, take a reading as soon as you move in. CCW says this ensures accurate billing, and a dated photo of the dial settles any later question about the opening figure.

  2. 2

Tell Anglian Water your move-in date

Anglian Water takes a move through MyAccount or its online moving form, and asks for the full address of the old and new homes and a meter reading for each. Give the date your tenancy or ownership started.

  3. 3

Check the first bill against that date

The first bill should start on your move-in date, use your opening reading if there is a meter, and show whether sewerage is on the same bill or comes from a second company.

The first bill

What is my first Anglian Water bill based on?

Two systems run side by side: a meter measures what you use, and an unmetered home is charged on a valuation that has nothing to do with usage.

  • Anglian Water: around 90% of its customers pay for water based on how much they use.
  • Anglian Water: between April 2025 and April 2030 it is fitting more meters and moving customers onto measured charges, in phases. The areas switching from 1 April 2026 are Norwich, Peterborough, Lincoln, Ely, Wellingborough and Rushden.
  • Anglian Water: if there is already a meter at your home and you are not paying measured rates, it writes to you before the switch and moves you across from the following April.
  • Ofwat: if you do not have a water meter, your bill is not based on how much water you use. It is usually a fixed charge plus a charge based on the rateable value of your home, a valuation last updated in 1990.
  • CCW: if your new home already has a water meter, you must pay metered charges based on your usage and you cannot switch to an unmetered bill. Take a reading as soon as you move in.
  • CCW: a water company can install a meter when you move in, but not if you have already received an unmetered bill for that property. It tells you when you report the move.

Meters

Can I get a water meter from Anglian Water, and can I switch back?

A meter is the only lever a household has on this bill, so the question is whether you can try one without being stuck with it.

  • Anglian Water: if you request a water meter before it gets to your area, you can move back to unmeasured rates at any point within the first 24 months of paying measured rates.
  • Anglian Water: once its switching programme reaches your area, you move onto metered charges, even if you previously chose to switch back.
  • Anglian Water: after it has switched your account, you can no longer choose to move back to unmeasured rates, even if your meter was fitted in the last 24 months, because you live in an area classed as water stressed.
  • Ofwat: household customers in England and Wales can choose to have a meter fitted in their homes free of charge. If a meter cannot be fitted, the company must offer an assessed charge instead.
  • Ofwat: in England, where the company is legally obliged to act on your request, it must begin measuring your supply within eight weeks of the day you ask.
  • CCW: you can usually switch back to the unmetered charge within two years if you are unhappy with the change, except for customers in areas of England where compulsory metering is introduced. Where the company publishes its own rule, as above, that is the one to go by.
  • CCW: you can ask for a water meter to be fitted if you rent your home in England.

Help with bills

What help does Anglian Water offer if I cannot afford the bill?

Two separate kinds of help. A social tariff is the company's own discount for low-income households. A bill cap protects metered homes that have to use a lot of water.

  • Anglian Water: LITE and Extra LITE give a discount of up to 50% on your ongoing charges, for households on low incomes who have a water meter or are happy to have one fitted for free.
  • Anglian Water: apply through its Extra Care Assessment, online or by calling its Extra Care team on 0800 169 3630, 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 4pm on Saturdays. It may ask for proof of household income or benefits.
  • Anglian Water: once you are on the tariff you need to keep up regular payments, and it reviews the tariff with you once a year.
  • CCW: every water company has a social tariff scheme which can help reduce your bills if you are on a low income, and who is eligible and the level of support varies depending on your water company.
  • CCW: WaterSure caps the water and sewerage bill of customers on a water meter who receive an income-related benefit and either get child benefit for three or more children under 19 or use extra water because of a medical condition.
  • GOV.UK: a WaterSure reform is set to come into force in early 2027. People on disability benefits become eligible where household income is below £25,745 a year, the cap moves to the lowest possible average bill, and the paid-for doctor's note goes. Scheduled, not yet in force.

Leaks and complaints

What if there is a leak, or a dispute with Anglian Water?

  • Anglian Water: its contact centre agents take any query on WhatsApp, Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm, Saturday 8am to 3pm and Sunday 10am to 3pm.
  • Anglian Water: its meter installation helpline, for making or changing a meter appointment, is 0345 850 5852.
  • CCW: the homeowner is responsible for maintaining the water pipes on private property up to the boundary of the road. The water main, the connection up to your boundary, the outside stop tap and the meter are the company's.
  • Ofwat: companies are required by their licences to reimburse the cost of water lost through leakage by way of credits to your bill, a leakage allowance that can apply to water and wastewater charges. You can only claim once the leak has been repaired, and it can be refused if you did not arrange the repair within the company's timeframe.
  • CCW: complain to the company first and give it a chance to put things right. If it does not reply within 10 working days you may be entitled to a Guaranteed Standards Scheme payment. CCW can take the complaint on once you have a final response or have waited eight weeks, and its service is free.

Where Taupia stands

Does Taupia switch my water from Anglian Water?

No, and nobody can. There is no water market for households, so there is no commission in this bill and nothing for a comparison site to sell you.

  • Taupia keeps the Anglian Water account next to your energy, broadband and mobile: what it costs, when it is due, and each housemate's share on the rule your household sets.
  • For energy, broadband and mobile, Taupia compares your tariff against the market and lines up a switch when one is worth it. Water is monitored only, because it cannot be switched.
  • Taupia is free. You pay the water company directly, as you always have, and nothing changes without your approval.

Anglian Water FAQ

Questions movers ask about Anglian Water

Can I switch from Anglian Water to a cheaper water company?

No. Ofwat says household customers cannot change their water supplier or sewerage provider, because the company depends on where you live. Anglian Water is the company for your address, and the only choice you get is how you are charged: on a meter, or on the property's unmetered charge.

Do I need to tell Anglian Water when I move in?

Yes, and as soon as you can. Anglian Water takes a move through MyAccount or its online moving form, and asks for the full address of the old and new homes and a meter reading for each. Give the date you became responsible for the property.

What is an unmetered Anglian Water bill based on?

Most Anglian Water homes are already metered: the company says around 90% of its customers pay for the water they use, and it is moving the rest of its region onto measured charges between April 2025 and April 2030. Using less water does not change an unmetered bill, because nothing is measured. A metered home pays for the water recorded plus a standing charge.

Can I switch back to unmetered charges with Anglian Water?

If you ask for a meter before Anglian Water's switching programme reaches your area, you can move back to unmeasured rates at any point in the first 24 months. Once the programme has switched your account, there is no switch back, because the region is classed as water stressed. Check the current terms with the company before you apply.

What help does Anglian Water give if I cannot afford the water bill?

Anglian Water's social tariffs, LITE and Extra LITE, give a discount of up to 50% on ongoing charges to low-income households with a meter, or willing to have one fitted free. You apply through its Extra Care Assessment. Ask early: CCW says companies can also offer payment plans and, in some cases, payment breaks.

Does Taupia switch my water supplier from Anglian Water?

No, because nobody can. Water is a regional monopoly with no household market, so Taupia monitors the bill rather than switching it. It sits alongside your energy, broadband and mobile, where switching is possible, with the due date and each housemate's share. Taupia is free and you keep paying the water company directly.

Keep the water bill with the rest

There is no water deal to switch to and no commission in this bill. Taupia keeps your Anglian Water account, move-in reading and dates next to your energy, broadband and mobile, and splits the bill with housemates on the rule you set. Free, and nothing changes without your approval.
