01How Uswitch works, and what Taupia does
What are you actually buying from Uswitch?
Uswitch is a comparison website, not a supplier: free to the person comparing, and paid commission by the provider when a switch completes. It builds an energy quote from the usage figures you type in, then returns a page of deals. Utrack, its own app, watches your meter if you connect one. Finding a deal is one job in running a home.
Taupia sits between that and a bills package, which folds several bills into one amount. Two ways in: give Taupia your address and provider quotes for energy, broadband and mobile come back in about two minutes, or upload a bill, a PDF or a photo, and AI agents pull out the tariff, unit rate, usage, contract end date and any exit fee, while other agents watch the market against what you pay now.
Either way you see the full list of what providers are offering. Taupia recommends one and shows why it picked that one, having asked a few questions first so the recommendation fits how your household lives rather than how the industry words things. The list stays there to check the pick against, and Taupia carries out the switch once you approve it.
Taupia compares energy, broadband and mobile only, and keeps contracts, changes, setup tasks, each bill split across the house on percentages you set, and provider messages sent to TaupiaMail or explicitly forwarded there. TaupiaMail is a Taupia email address you give your providers, where AI agents read what arrives and pull out price changes, contract end dates and anything needing a decision. Taupia does the chasing
So nobody in the house has to be the one who asks. Each housemate repays the person the bill is in the name of directly, outside Taupia, and the share reads as settled once it has been repaid. Taupia sends reminders while a share is outstanding, and everyone sees the same shares and who has settled.

One housemate is the person the supplier bills
A utility account is usually opened in one person's name. That one named account holder is who the supplier bills, and the obligation to the supplier stays theirs whoever in the house has paid their share. Taupia can send a request to add further people to the account, but the supplier decides. If a share is late, Taupia flags it and sends reminders. It never moves money between housemates, and nothing it records changes what the named holder owes the supplier.

Your postcode and a usage figure. Uswitch's own guide to comparing energy says the postcode gives it regional unit rates and an estimate from publicly available data, that it pre-fills that for you, and that you may need to add a couple of details such as your usage in kWh, adding: estimates are fine, so it might help to have a bill to hand.

What the comparison can miss
Uswitch publishes the limit itself. Asked whether all available providers are featured, it says it includes as many suppliers and products as possible, but that some suppliers have removed themselves from all price comparison websites and sell direct instead. It does not name which.

Who pays whom
Free for the person comparing, and paid for by the provider: Uswitch says it earns money through commissions paid by service providers when you switch through the site, and that this does not affect the deals you see. It adds that its commercial team secures exclusive broadband and mobile deals for Uswitch customers, so on those two a price there may not match going direct.

When is Uswitch the better answer?
Choose Uswitch if
You are comparing something outside energy, broadband and mobile. Uswitch's own list runs from insurance and mortgages to pensions, investment ISAs and a business range, none of which Taupia can see.
You are comparing in a browser and nothing else: no address given, no bill uploaded, and no provider messages sent or forwarded to TaupiaMail. Taupia works from your address or your own bills, so one of them has to go in.
You want a deal that exists only through a comparison site. Uswitch says it secures exclusive offers for its customers on broadband and mobile, so a price shown there may not be available direct, or through Taupia.

What do you give up by choosing Taupia?
Taupia does not bundle your payment. It helps you set up directly with each provider, then splits and manages it all with the prices in view, which is why it costs you nothing. Here is what that route does not give you.
Taupia only compares energy, broadband and mobile. It does not compare or switch water, insurance, credit, savings or mortgages.
A provider pays Taupia commission when a switch completes. On energy and gas the rate is the same whichever supplier you pick, so an energy recommendation does not pay Taupia more one way or the other. Broadband and mobile rates vary a little. The full list it recommends from is the suppliers Taupia supports, published on its supported suppliers page.

What happens if the usage figures you type in are wrong?
Every energy quote is built on an annual kWh figure, and every tariff is a standing charge plus a unit rate. Understate the usage and tariffs with a low standing charge look best; overstate it and the low unit rates win. The ranking moves with the estimate. Taupia reads the figure off your last bill instead. Uswitch offers Utrack, a free app connecting to your smart meter, which solves the same problem from the meter end.
What are the alternatives to Uswitch?
MoneySuperMarket and Compare the Market are the other large UK comparison sites, on the same commission model. Uswitch's own list runs wider than bills and insurance, adding mortgages, loans, savings, pensions and investment ISAs. A supplier's own site lists that supplier's tariffs for nothing, if you already know who you want. Taupia compares energy, broadband and mobile from your address or your real bills, then keeps the contracts, changes and wider home admin around those bills organised.
Will the deal you see be the price you pay?
On energy, yes: the tariff is the supplier's own published one, and the account opens in your name at that rate. Two things move the total afterwards. Your actual consumption rather than the annual figure the quote assumed, and, on broadband and mobile, Uswitch says it secures exclusive deals for its customers, so a price shown there may not be available direct.
How much work is doing this yourselves, and how long does it take?
Taupia estimates about thirty minutes of setup admin for a household opening every account unaided. Ofgem's standard is then up to five working days for an energy switch, and broadband and mobile run on their own timings. Through Taupia that half hour is not yours to spend: it only recommends a deal it can complete, and once you approve the switch it handles the rest.
