Quick answer
If you are moving house around Black Friday, check availability at the new address and confirm when service can start before choosing an offer. Compare the full contract cost, any exit fee at your old home and the conditions attached to rewards. A headline monthly discount does not tell you whether the deal fits your move or tenancy.
Plan broadband for your new address
Check the move-in options in Taupia, then confirm availability, contract terms and the start date before choosing a provider.
Check the new address before the offer
A broadband promotion is useful only if the service reaches your new home and starts when you need it. Enter the full address with the provider, rather than relying on availability at your old postcode. Ask whether the date shown is an estimate or a confirmed appointment, whether an engineer needs access and where the router will be delivered.
Ofcom's moving-home advice starts with checking broadband and mobile coverage at the new property. Our broadband setup guide puts those checks in order.
Ask your current provider for two written options
Before cancelling, ask what it would cost to move your existing service and what it would cost to leave it. Request the remaining minimum term, any transfer charge, whether moving starts a new contract and the earliest service date.
For a change of address, confirm how the old account will close. Ofcom's moving-home guidance says to arrange cancellation and the new service's start date when changing provider. Its One Touch Switch guide describes ordinary provider switching; ask the providers how your home move will be handled.
An early termination fee may apply during a minimum term. Some providers contribute towards exit fees, but check the conditions and evidence required before counting on that money. Use our moving-house exit-fee guide to prepare the questions for your provider.
Compare the full cost of each option
Use the same comparison period and the same speed requirement for every offer. Copy the figures from the contract summary and the promotion's terms into this worksheet.
| Item | Moving your current service | Taking a new offer |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum term and end date | Record both | Record both |
| Monthly price in each period | Record price and dates | Record price and dates |
| Setup, delivery and transfer charges | Record each charge | Record each charge |
| Old contract exit fee | Ask whether one applies | Get the exact amount |
| Days paid at both addresses | Estimate from agreed dates | Estimate from agreed dates |
| Reward or exit-fee contribution | Check eligibility | Check claim steps and deadlines |
| Total payable before rewards | Add the charges | Add the charges |
Calculate monthly charges separately for each price period, then add one-off charges, exit fees and overlap. Keep conditional rewards on a separate line so you can also compare the cost if you do not receive them.
A Black Friday starting price can rise during the contract. Ofcom's price-rise guidance says specified increases in new contracts must be disclosed upfront in pounds and pence. Read the amounts and dates before signing. If your current minimum term is ending, compare this with renewing or switching.
Taupia can help you compare available broadband deals at the new address. Use the figures above to check whether an offer suits your move, then confirm the full contract terms, any reward conditions and the service date with the provider before ordering.
Match the contract to your tenancy
Write your tenancy end date beside the broadband minimum-term end date. If broadband runs longer, ask what happens if your next address is outside the network, already includes internet or needs a different service. Get any promised fee waiver in writing. A discounted monthly price can still be a poor fit if leaving at the end of your tenancy costs more.
Check social tariffs before choosing a promotion
If you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit or another qualifying benefit, check Ofcom's social tariff list. Eligibility and coverage depend on the provider. Ofcom says social tariffs have no mid-contract price rises or early leaving fees. Compare the available service with your needs using our social tariff guide.
Keep a plan for a changed move date
Before ordering, ask how to amend an activation date and whether a change affects the offer or costs. Save the order confirmation and promised start date. Check mobile reception and your data allowance if you will need a hotspot while waiting. Our installation-delay guide explains what to record and how compensation eligibility works.
The guidance and linked regulator pages were checked on 20 October 2026. Check a promotion's current terms at the point of order.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wait for Black Friday to order broadband for a move?
Start with the service date you need. Check new-address availability and appointments now, then compare any offer against the full contract cost. Waiting for a promotion does not guarantee a suitable installation date.
Does a broadband reward cover my old exit fee?
Only count a contribution if the offer terms confirm that you qualify. Check the amount, evidence, claim deadline and payment timing; compare the cost before conditional rewards too.
What if my tenancy is shorter than the broadband contract?
Ask what happens when you move again, including transfer availability, charges and any new minimum term. Get the answer in writing before signing.
