Housr bills or organising your own?

Short answer

Housr offers Lite and Unlimited bills packages with different usage arrangements. Organising bills directly keeps separate supplier contracts and charges. Compare the same services, tenancy dates and usage, then check payment responsibility and leaving terms. A package can simplify administration; neither approach is automatically cheaper for every student house.

See the bills for your student house

Pick the house's address to see who supplies its energy and the cap rate for that region, its water company and that company's average bill, broadband deals, and the council tax exemption for an all-student house, in one list to share between housemates.

You pick your exact address on the next screen. Nothing is priced before that.

England, Scotland and Wales. The water figure is the company's average bill. A house where everyone is a full-time student is exempt from council tax once the council has your certificates.

Choose how your student house pays for bills before choosing a monthly price.

What changes when you choose a package?

Housr combines services in a bills package. Going direct means choosing supplier contracts separately. The useful comparison is the full cost and responsibility for the same home, rather than one weekly headline.

  • List the services your tenancy includes before asking anyone for quotes.
  • Use the same start and end dates, household size and energy assumptions for each option.
  • Keep setup charges and any final settlement beside the monthly payments.

How do Housr Lite and Unlimited differ?

Housr's comparison describes Lite as an allowance-based product with a possible refund or final bill. Unlimited is marketed with no usage limit or final bill. Those are different products, so do not apply a Lite allowance to an Unlimited quote.

  • The Unlimited page lists water as optional and a £35 broadband installation fee. Confirm both in your order.
  • Ask which terms apply to your chosen package if the quote and a general webpage appear to disagree.

What should housemates check before signing?

Housr's platform terms distinguish using its app from buying Housr Bills, which has a separate paid contract. Read the bills agreement and your order together; an app account is not the utilities contract.

  • Who signs, who pays, and what happens if one person misses a payment?
  • What changes if a housemate leaves while still named on the tenancy?
  • When does each service start, and is any installation appointment required?
  • What are the cancellation charges and the process for ending the services?

How does Taupia help with the direct-bills approach?

Taupia is free to use. Start with the student house's address to see the supported bills, save a plan and choose which available services to arrange. Energy changes only once you approve a deal. Supplier contracts and payments remain with the providers.

  • Compare available energy deals for the address, or use a bill to compare your own usage.
  • Keep water, council tax and TV Licence in the household plan; these are organised, not switched.
  • Track agreed housemate shares without changing what the named account holder owes the supplier.
  • Taupia does not sell a fixed monthly bills bundle or guarantee it will beat a package quote.

Questions before you choose

Is Housr always cheaper than paying suppliers directly?

There is no single answer for every house. Compare a real package quote with direct supplier costs for the same services, usage and tenancy dates. Include setup charges and the contract's treatment of extra usage, leaving early and final settlements before choosing.

Are all Housr energy packages capped?

No. Housr currently distinguishes an allowance-based Lite product from Unlimited. Read the package description and the bills contract attached to your quote, and ask Housr to resolve any inconsistency before agreeing. An older description of another package is not enough.

Does using the Housr app mean I bought its bills package?

Housr's platform terms describe the app and website separately from the paid Housr Bills contract. Check whether you have accepted a utilities order, its start date and its services. A platform login alone does not explain which bills agreement you hold.

What should I compare if I am also considering UniHomes or Split The Bills?

Use the same house, services and tenancy period for every quote. Compare the total cost, usage treatment and each person's contract responsibilities, rather than assuming similarly named packages work alike. Keep each provider's written quote and the terms that apply to it.
