Quick answer

Confirm what happens to the tenancy, list every supplier account, record dated meter readings, ask providers to confirm account changes and agree how later bills will be settled. Moving out or deleting someone from a splitting app does not by itself end their tenancy or supplier liability.

Update your household bill split

Agree the new shares, then use Taupia to track bills and payments while keeping your supplier accounts.

A housemate leaving changes more than the headcount used to split the next bill. Start by agreeing the departure date and checking which contracts need an update. Keep the tenancy decision separate from the energy, broadband and water accounts.

Before giving notice, establish what happens to the tenancy

The rules below describe common private renting arrangements, checked on 7 October 2026. Halls, lodgers and other tenancy types can follow different rules.

  • England: most covered private assured tenancies became periodic on 1 May 2026. One joint tenant can usually end the whole tenancy with valid notice. If the rest want to stay, speak to the landlord before notice is served. An agreed replacement or assignment is a different process.
  • Wales: a joint occupation contract-holder can leave without ending the whole contract by following the withdrawal process. Obtain the written contract and confirm the notices and dates with the landlord.
  • Scotland: joint private residential tenants currently need to agree to end the tenancy together. If one person wants to leave while others stay, seek an agreed change and written confirmation of responsibility.
  • Northern Ireland: use advice for your tenancy under Northern Ireland rules. The English, Welsh and Scottish processes above do not establish your notice requirements.

Do not assume a student house always has a fixed 12-month tenancy. Check the accommodation type, nation and actual agreement. If the outcome is disputed, get tenancy advice before promising a replacement a room.

List who holds each account

Make a shared record of the provider, account holder, contract end date, outstanding balance and contact method for energy, water, broadband and council tax or rates. Keep full account numbers and personal details out of a public group document.

A private agreement to pay one third of a bill does not limit what a supplier can collect under its contract. Ask each provider how to remove or change a named customer, whether a new account is required and whether fees apply. Get confirmation rather than assuming that changing a bank payment has changed the contract.

For energy, check who is responsible for the bill. Do not close a continuing household account without first agreeing how the remaining occupants will receive supply.

On handover day, preserve evidence

  1. Photograph electricity, gas and any accessible water meters. Record the date, reading and meter serial number.
  2. Retain the move-out or agreed responsibility date and any replacement's opening readings.
  3. Send the appropriate readings and contact details to the supplier through its secure channel.
  4. Ask for written confirmation of the closing balance or account change. Keep the reference number.
  5. Tell the council about occupancy changes and check whether a student exemption or discount needs updating.

An opening reading should be a real dated reading. If one is missing, give the supplier the evidence you have and ask it to review its estimate. Never invent an earlier reading. Our energy setup guide explains the move-date evidence, and council-tax setup covers the council update.

Agree how to split the departure month

Separate fixed charges from variable usage. Standing charges and a broadband subscription continue even when a room is empty. Decide which people share them and for which responsibility dates. Use meter readings for usage where possible; a days-based split is an agreed estimate, not a measurement.

Worked example: a 30-day period has £90 of fixed charges. Three people share responsibility for the first 10 days; two share the remaining 20. The first £30 is £10 each. The remaining £60 is £30 each for the two staying. The leaver pays £10 and each remaining person £40. This illustrates household arithmetic, not a supplier's legal allocation.

For a couple, agree whether each person counts separately for shared bills; room value may still be the fair basis for rent. For an absence, an agreed usage adjustment need not remove fixed costs. Use the bill-splitting guide and calculator to check that all shares add to the bill.

Leave a route for final bills and a replacement

Record how late bills, corrections and refunds will be shared, who will send the evidence and how the leaver can be contacted securely. Do not treat the latest Direct Debit as a final settlement: payments and actual charges can differ.

Give the replacement the agreed opening date, readings, provider contacts and split rules. Update household tracking after the providers confirm their changes. Taupia can help track shares and payments; a tracking change does not transfer contractual responsibility.

Key takeaways

  • Confirm what happens to the tenancy, list every supplier account, record dated meter readings, ask providers to confirm account changes and agree how later bills will be settled. Moving out or deleting someone from a splitting app does not by itself end their tenancy or supplier liability.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a housemate from an energy account myself?

Ask the supplier what evidence and consent it needs, and obtain written confirmation. Updating household tracking or a bank payment does not change the supply contract.

How do we split a partial month?

Agree responsibility dates, allocate fixed costs across those dates and use readings for variable usage where available. State when a days-based usage allocation is an estimate.

Does one person leaving end our joint tenancy?

It depends on the nation and tenancy type. In England a valid notice can usually end the whole assured joint tenancy; Wales and Scotland have different processes. Check before giving notice.
