ENGINEER VISIT

Do You Need an Engineer to Switch Broadband?

Same network = no engineer. Different network = engineer likely.

Is your new provider on the same fibre network as your current one?

✓ Yes - same network

e.g. BT Full Fibre -> Sky Ultrafast (both Openreach)

No engineer needed

Your ONT box stays in place.

Switch done remotely.

Plug in new router and go.

✕ No - different network

e.g. Virgin Media -> Sky, or Openreach -> CityFibre

Engineer likely

New ONT and cables needed.

Can't reuse existing setup.

Taupia flags this before you commit.

Unsure whether it's the same network? Check the network behind the exact deal before you commit.

WHICH PROVIDERS SHARE A NETWORK?

Stay on the same network and nobody comes to your door.

Check whether your current provider and your new one are in the same row.

NETWORKPROVIDERS USING IT
OpenreachBT, Sky, TalkTalk, Plusnet, EE, NOW Broadband, Vodafone
CityFibreVodafone, Sky, TalkTalk, Zen Internet, IDNet, Giganet
Virgin MediaVirgin Media only
HyperopticHyperoptic only
Community FibreCommunity Fibre only

WORTH KNOWING

Some providers - Vodafone and Sky - operate on more than one network. Whether an engineer is needed can depend on which specific deal you're moving to, not just the provider name. Check the specific network behind the deal before you commit.

YOUR TWO SCENARIOS

Same network or different - here's what each means in practice.

Switching to a provider on the same fibre network

e.g. BT Full Fibre -> Sky Ultrafast, both on Openreach

NO ENGINEER

Your ONT box stays. Your cabling stays. Nothing physical changes. Your new provider activates service through the existing infrastructure on the agreed date. A new router arrives beforehand - plug it in when your service goes live. That's the entire process on your end.

Switching to a provider on a different fibre network

e.g. Virgin Media -> Sky (Openreach), or Openreach -> CityFibre

ENGINEER LIKELY

The new network uses different physical infrastructure. Your existing ONT and cabling can't be reused. An engineer needs to come and install the new network's connection to your home - including a new ONT box. It's essentially the same as a first-time installation for that network, though it may be quicker since your home is already set up for it. This should be flagged before you commit.

EARLY EXIT FEES

Still in contract? Here's what to expect.

If you're within your minimum contract period, you may have to pay an early exit fee. You'll be told the exact amount before you commit - no surprises.

If your contract has already ended or you're on a rolling monthly deal, there's no penalty at all. This is usually the ideal moment to switch.

FAQs

Questions about broadband switching timing

What is the broadband loyalty tax?

The broadband loyalty tax is the extra amount long-standing customers often pay compared with new-customer deals. Introductory pricing usually ends after the minimum term, and many households are moved to higher default rates unless they renegotiate or switch.

Why do broadband bills jump after the first contract?

Many plans start with discounted pricing, then move to a higher standard rate when the initial term ends. If you do not review alternatives before renewal, your monthly bill can rise without any improvement in speed or service.

What if my broadband starts later than planned?

If your service starts later than the agreed date, you may be eligible for daily compensation through your provider under Ofcom's compensation scheme.

How can I check if my provider offers delay compensation?

Check your provider's compensation policy before you switch. Most major providers are part of the scheme, but coverage is not universal.

Why does my old provider suddenly offer a better deal when I leave?

It is common to receive a better retention offer when you give notice. In many cases, that pricing was available earlier but only surfaced when you started to switch. You are not required to accept it, so compare it with your new offer before deciding.

Do I need to contact my current broadband provider myself?

In most switches, the gaining provider handles the transfer process. Timeline milestones are shown as they are confirmed.

How long does broadband switching usually take?

Broadband switches are often around 10 to 14 working days, depending on provider and connection type. New contracts usually include a 14-day cooling-off period.

Will my broadband service stop during the switch?

Broadband usually stays active until the new provider takes over, though a brief interruption can happen on the switch day.
